A little about the game

Meet Retro Mario Revival

Run, jump and stomp through four themed worlds. Grab power-ups, leave an Echo decoy behind and find hidden bonus rooms in this retro platformer game.

How to play Retro Mario Revival

Keyboard: arrow keys or A and D move (moving always runs), Space, W, Up or Z jump (hold for a higher jump), X throws a fireball once you have the Fire Flower, and Down or S enters a warp pipe. Touch: slide your thumb on the left pad to steer (its middle ▼ enters a warp pipe), hold the large JUMP button for a higher jump, and tap FIRE, which appears while you can shoot. Stomp enemies from above, bump blocks from below and reach the goal pole before the clock runs out. Hidden blocks hide 1-Ups, coin bricks pay out several coins, and warp pipes lead to bonus rooms. Four levels take you from sunny meadows through glowing caverns and a fiery keep to a cloud spire. You have three lives for the whole run and restart from the last checkpoint. Grab a Super Mushroom to survive one hit, a Fire Flower to throw fireballs, or an Echo Flower to leave a decoy that repeats your moves a moment late and draws seekers away. Optional settings switch to a 3D view and add colorblind-safe outlines.

A tip for your next run

Build up speed before a gap: a running jump goes higher and farther than a standing one, and holding jump makes it higher still.

What is a side-scrolling platformer?

A side-scrolling platformer is a game where you run and jump across a level that scrolls sideways, landing on platforms, avoiding pits and stomping enemies. Retro Mario Revival follows that formula with momentum-based running, variable-height jumps and a goal pole at the end of each level.

How do you play Retro Mario Revival?

Run right, jump over pits and pipes and stomp the walking enemies. Bump question blocks from below for coins and power-ups, pass the checkpoints and touch the goal pole before the timer runs out. You have three lives for the whole run and return to the last checkpoint after each fall or hit.

What are the Retro Mario Revival controls?

On a keyboard, use the arrow keys or A and D to move, Space, W, Up or Z to jump and X to throw a fireball. Hold jump for a higher leap. On a phone, slide your thumb on the left pad to move, hold the large JUMP button, and tap FIRE when it appears. Escape pauses and ? opens help.

What does the Echo Flower do?

The Echo Flower leaves a decoy that repeats your own moves about 0.4 seconds late for eight seconds. Seeker enemies chase the nearest of you and the decoy, so it can pull them away from your path. The decoy uses the same movement rules as you do.

What are coyote time and jump buffering?

Coyote time lets you still jump for about 50 milliseconds after running off a ledge, and jump buffering remembers a jump you pressed about 67 milliseconds before landing. Both are on by default so near-miss jumps feel fair; the jump arcs themselves follow classic momentum physics.

In what order do the power-ups work?

Power-ups come in order. A Super Mushroom makes small players big, and a Fire Flower only gives fireballs to a big player, so a small player who grabs one just becomes big first. A hit shrinks you back to small and loses the fire. A 1-Up adds a life and a Starman makes you unhurtable for a few seconds.

How do warp pipes and bonus rooms work?

Stand centred on a warp pipe and press Down (or the middle ▼ button of the touch pad) to drop into a bonus room full of coins or blocks. Collect what you can, then stand on the green pipe at the right end and press Down again to come back out where you left.

How do you beat the boss in Ember Keep?

Throw six fireballs at the boss, or jump over it and run to the goal pole. Keep moving, because it breathes fire along the floor. Bring a Fire Flower from the earlier blocks so you are ready.

How many levels does Retro Mario Revival have?

There are four levels, one per world: Sunrise Meadows (grassland), Glowcap Caverns (underground), Ember Keep (castle) and Cloud Spire (sky). Each ends at a goal pole, and your lives, coins and score carry from one level to the next.

Does Retro Mario Revival have 3D graphics?

The default look is polished 2D art with layered scenery and smooth animation. An optional 3D mode is in beta: switch it on with the 3D graphics button, and the game returns to the 2D look on devices that cannot draw 3D smoothly.

Is Retro Mario Revival an original game?

Yes. Retro Mario Revival has its own hero, enemies, levels and rules. It is inspired by the feel of classic side-scrolling platformers (momentum running, variable-height jumps, stomping and power-ups) and adds an Echo decoy and original characters. It is an independent game, not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.

Is Retro Mario Revival free to play?

Yes. It is free in your browser with no download or sign-up, and it works on phones with a touch pad. Your best score is saved on your own device only.
