A little about the game

Meet Highway Rider

Ride a motorbike down a busy motorway in first person. Weave between cars, trucks and buses that change lanes, skim past them to charge your nitro and see how far you can go.

How to play Highway Rider

The bike rides on its own and speeds up from 115 km/h to 180 km/h as the kilometres pass; you change lanes through four lanes of traffic. The bike always rides in a lane, and each lane change is a quick swerve into the next one. Keyboard: press Left or Right (or A and D) to change lane, one lane a press; hold Up (or W) to speed up and Down (or S) to brake; Space or Shift fires the nitro. Touch: swipe left or right anywhere on the road, or tap its left or right side, to change lane; swipe up or tap the Nitro button for nitro; swipe down and keep your thumb down to brake. Vehicles react as you close in: one may blink its indicator for under a second, then pull over towards your lane. Swerve out of a vehicle's lane at the last moment, under about half a second before you would hit it, then pass it at 100 km/h or faster for a 50-point close pass; passing a vehicle in the next lane at that speed is a 20-point side pass; close passes less than four seconds apart chain up to ×5. Close passes fill the nitro meter, and riding fills it slowly too: you start with half a meter, and a full meter gives 4.5 seconds at 85 km/h over cruising speed, with double points a metre. You score a point a metre at 100 km/h, and more the faster you ride. Fog banks roll in now and then and cut how far you can see. Touching any vehicle ends the ride.

A tip for your next run

Watch the indicators on the cars you are about to pass: they blink for under a second before pulling over towards you. Leave a swerve late for a close pass, but check the next lane first. Save the nitro for an open stretch, because traffic comes at you much faster while it burns.

How do you play Highway Rider?

You ride a motorbike down a four-lane motorway in first person. The bike keeps going and gets faster the further you ride, so you change lanes between the cars, vans, trucks and buses ahead, which sometimes change lanes. Touching any vehicle ends the ride, and your score is the distance you covered plus any close-pass bonuses.

How do close passes work in Highway Rider?

Ride up behind a vehicle in your lane and swerve into the next lane at the last moment, less than about half a second before you would hit it. Pass it at 100 km/h or faster and you earn 50 points. Overtaking a vehicle in the next lane at that speed is a side pass worth 20. Each close pass within four seconds of the last raises the chain, up to ×5, so a run of tight passes is worth up to 250 points each. Every close pass also charges your nitro.

How does nitro work in Highway Rider?

You start every ride with half a nitro meter, and it fills from close and side passes and steadily as you ride. Once it is at least a third full, press Space or Shift (or, on a touch screen, swipe up or tap Nitro) for a burst of 85 km/h over cruising speed that doubles the points you score a metre. A full meter lasts 4.5 seconds. Traffic comes at you much faster while it burns, and braking cuts it short.

Do cars change lanes in Highway Rider?

Yes, as you close in on them. A vehicle blinks its indicator for under a second, then slides into the next lane, often towards yours, braking if that lane is slower; they do it more often the further you ride. A car never cuts in close in front of you and a lane change never blocks the last open lane, but you have to watch the indicators and keep out of the way. Your bike always rides in a lane, never on the line between two, so you have to pick a gap.

Can you play Highway Rider on a phone?

Yes, and it is made for one thumb. Swipe left or right anywhere on the road, or tap its left or right side, to change lane; swipe up for nitro and swipe down and hold to brake. The only button is a large Nitro button in the bottom corner, and it works in portrait and landscape with no download.

Can you speed up or brake in Highway Rider?

On a keyboard, hold Up or W to ride 25 km/h faster than the cruising speed for more points a metre, and hold Down or S to brake to 80 km/h when the traffic gets tight. Braking below 100 km/h means passes no longer count as close passes. On a touch screen, swipe down and keep your thumb down to brake; otherwise the bike rides at cruising speed, and nitro gives you bursts of extra speed.

Is Highway Rider free to play?

Yes. It is free in your browser with no download or sign-up, and it has no leaderboard. Your best score is saved on your own device.
