A little about the game

Meet MeowDoku

Solve Sudoku with cats, each breed once per row, column and box. A new puzzle arrives every day, with four tiers from Kitten to Feral.

How to play MeowDoku

Tap an empty square, then tap a cat under the grid to place it. Put each cat exactly once in every row, every column and every box. A cat that repeats one in its row, column or box turns red and counts as a mistake. Notes pencils in several maybes, and Undo steps back. Yarn Trace points at a square that logic settles and says why (3 uses, 50 points each), and Catnip places the right cat (3 uses, 100 points each). Unlimited lets you pick Kitten (6×6), Adult Cat, Alley Cat or Feral; the daily rises from Kitten on Monday to Feral on Sunday. Nine Lives ends the run on the ninth mistake, for a bonus. Unlimited also offers Mystery (one breed hides behind a question mark until you have placed all of it), Blitz (beat a countdown; the only ranked mode) and Co-op (two players on one device take turns). The Cat Café button shows the cats that have moved in. Keyboard: arrow keys or WASD move, 1 to 9 place a cat, Backspace erases, N toggles notes, U undoes, Y uses yarn and H uses catnip.

A tip for your next run

Look for a cat with only one square left in a row, column or box, then pencil notes wherever two cats compete for the same square.

What kind of puzzle is MeowDoku?

MeowDoku is Sudoku with cats. Each of nine cat breeds replaces a digit, and the rules and logic are the same: every row, column and box holds each cat once. You solve it by deduction alone, with no luck or guessing involved.

Is MeowDoku the same as Sudoku?

Nearly. MeowDoku keeps Sudoku's rules and one-solution grids but places nine cat breeds instead of digits. It adds a small 6 by 6 Kitten grid, pencil notes, Yarn Trace hints and a daily puzzle. For a numbered grid, try Sudoku Studio.

How do you solve a MeowDoku grid?

Look for a square where only one cat fits because the others already sit in its row, column or box, or a cat that has only one square left in a line. Pencil in notes where cats compete and cross them off as the grid fills.

Does every MeowDoku grid have exactly one solution?

Yes. A solver checks each grid when it is made and keeps it only if one arrangement of cats works. Kitten and Adult Cat grids can be finished with single-step logic alone, while Alley Cat and Feral grids need harder moves.

What are the MeowDoku difficulty tiers?

Kitten is a 6 by 6 grid with 20 cats given and Adult Cat is a 9 by 9 grid with 34 given. Alley Cat and Feral are 9 by 9 grids that give only about 20 to 27 cats, so they ask for harder logic. Unlimited lets you pick any tier.

When does a new MeowDoku arrive, and how hard is it?

A new MeowDoku arrives every day at midnight UTC, the same for every player. Monday is a Kitten grid, Tuesday and Wednesday are Adult Cat, Thursday to Saturday are Alley Cat and Sunday is Feral.

Is MeowDoku good for kids and beginners?

Yes. Kitten is a small 6 by 6 grid with 20 cats already placed and only six breeds, and Kitten and Adult Cat grids need nothing beyond one-step logic. The clock only adds a speed bonus, and mistakes never end a run unless you switch on Nine Lives.

What do Yarn Trace and Catnip do in MeowDoku?

Yarn Trace points at a square that logic settles and tells you why; it costs 50 points and you have 3 per grid. Catnip places the right cat for 100 points, also 3 per grid. Each mistake costs 50 points, and Undo is free.

What are the MeowDoku game modes?

Classic is the default. Mystery hides one breed behind a question mark until you have placed all of it, for 150 bonus points. Blitz races a countdown equal to the tier's par time, and only Blitz runs reach the weekly leaderboard. Co-op lets two players on one device take turns.

What is the MeowDoku Cat Café?

The Cat Café is a progress screen kept on your device. Every solved grid earns a treat and a daily earns two. New breeds move in at 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36 and 45 treats. Around Halloween, winter and Valentine's Day the cats also wear a small holiday badge.

What is Nine Lives mode in MeowDoku?

Nine Lives is an optional mode you switch on before your first move. The ninth mistake ends the run, and solving the grid earns a 150 point bonus. Without it, mistakes only cost points and you can always keep going.

Are the MeowDoku cats easy to tell apart?

Yes. Each of the nine breeds has its own ear shape, face shape and markings, so you never rely on colour alone, which helps colour-blind players. Selecting a cat lights every matching cat, and each cat button shows how many are left to place.

Can you play MeowDoku with a keyboard or screen reader?

Yes. Focus the grid, move with the arrow keys or W, A, S and D, press 1 to 9 to place a cat, N for notes, Backspace to erase, U to undo, Y for Yarn Trace and H for Catnip. A screen reader announces each square, its cat or notes and any conflicts.
